Inspired by the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage, Conservation Career Compass is the go-to career building resource for Hawaiʻi’s next generation of environmental stewards to navigate their voyage to a mālama ʻāina career by providing career guidance, advice from professionals in the field, job listings, and more!

Hawaiʻi Conservation Alliance Objectives

  1. Hawaiʻi has consistent opportunities for rich exchange of knowledge and practice, cutting edge science, and networking to improve and grow stewardship of biocultural resources.
  2. Hawaiʻi’s emerging professionals have greater access, awareness, and passion for ʻāina-based career opportunities that develop technical and learned skills, empowering them to become conservation leaders in Hawaiʻi.

Inspired by the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage of Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia (voyaging canoes of the Polynesian Voyaging Society) the Hawaiʻi Conservation Alliance and Foundation signed the Promise to PaeʻĀina with other leading conservation groups. From this Promise, a commitment to Our Future was formed to invest in the future leaders of Hawaiʻi by providing proper tools, training, and experience to advance conservation work beyond our lifetimes and abilities. Conservation Career Compass (Compass) is a lasting project that emerged from this collective effort.

Conservation Career Compass, sister site to Conservation Connections, highlights the various steppingstones and pathways to a career in conservation in Hawaiʻi. It provides students and emerging professionals with awareness of and access to the diverse conservation careers and opportunities needed cultivate the necessary skills. This project empowers Hawaiʻi’s youth to earn a livable income through a conservation job and becoming Hawaiʻi’s next generation of conservation leaders.

Conservation Career Compass houses career-oriented resources such as recommended academic programs that lead to conservation careers, scholarships, fellowship programs, professional development opportunities, and real-time opportunities posted also on Conservation Connections (volunteering, community events, internships, and jobs).

Conservation Career Compass also offers career pathway advice and insight to skill development through a series of video vignettes (Navigator Spotlights) career guidance blog articles from a diversity of established conservation professionals in Hawaiʻi. The Navigator Spotlights provide a sneak peek into the day-to-day lives of conservationists sharing their story and journey into conservation. Topics covered by the blog articles include interviewing, civic engagement, resume writing, abstract writing, and more!
